Rugby League Rules

Rugby league governing bodies are permitted to vary the Laws for use in their own competitions. This allows countries to cater for their own "priorities, competitors and opportunities", while avoiding the hindrance to progress that a necessity for international agreement might cause. In the past, "pre-tour agreements" between opponents have been employed to deal with differences.
International rugby competitions, including the World Cup, are often played under rules that differ from the official Laws.
The Laws have undergone significant changes since pioneers of the sport broke away from the Rugby football establishment in 1895. Sean Fagan, a rugby league historian, describes the sport as a "constantly evolving animal, particularly with professional coaches, [with which] the rules have to keep pace".

Rugby Union Rules

Scoring

Rugby union is played between two teams – the one that scores more points wins the game. Points can be scored in several ways: a try, scored by grounding the ball in the in-goal area (between the goal line and the dead ball line), is worth 5 points and a subsequent conversion kick scores 2 points; a successful penalty kick or a drop goal each score 3 points.

It is originated in England in 1895 as a split from the Rugby Football Union over the issue of payments to players. Its rules gradually changed with the purpose of producing a faster, more entertaining game for spectators. It is frequently cited as the toughest, most physically demanding of team sports.

Rugby

Rugby is a sport played between two teams that try to score points by advancing a ball to the opposing team's goal line or by kicking the ball through a pair of uprights on the opponent's goal line. Players can run with the ball, kick it or pass it backward or sideways to a teammate. Opposing players try to tackle the player who has the ball or gain possession of the ball.
